I tried to convert a smaugfuss area file today because i liked a few of them. When I try this i get:
Log: load_stock_area_file: Invalid header at start of area file
is there something i need to do before i try and convert them?

The conversion routine was never updated to handle processing files in the FUSS format. The areas included with SmaugFUSS are all stock Smaug files, so you can do the conversion on one from 1.4a instead. I have no plans to update the conversion routine to deal with this.
