I'm a grad student who got into Realms of Despair back in '96 when I was a kid and played it off and on since then. I still play it to this day, though for very few hours a week. I started dabbling in SMAUG building somewhere around 1999 or 2000 and did that for awhile, then I taught myself coding. Currently I'm head coder at Lands of Aethar, the 2nd oldest SMAUG MUD in the world (it was launched before SMAUG was released, thanks to a beta version). My name there is Curufinwe. I'm currently waiting for the head admin there to approve and port over the backbone of my magnum opus so far: the Shadowplane. Shadowplane creates an alternate universe where different laws of physics apply: there are no races/classes/levels, and theoretically no limit to player growth through training, questing and pkill. Players can shift between the planes using special portals. A player can be a god in one plane and a newbie in the other -- they have independent bodies in each. The laws of physics in Shadowplane are loosely derived from the Godwars and VampireWars codebases (in concept only - they are coded from scratch). Effectively once the Shadowplane is ported over, there will be two MUDs running off one executable file, with shared playerbase/areas, linked by portals.

I sure am glad to have found a community where SMAUG is actively discussed. :grinning: Thanks a ton everyone for all the great SMAUG deliberations

Right now I am quite inactive both on SMAUGFUSS and on Lands of Aethar because it's the middle of a school quarter and I'm busy as heck  But once I have some spare time, all the SMAUG bugs had better run for cover  :alien:

Wow, aside from being a nice intro, that Shadowplane sounds really cool. :grinning:
