Just thought I'd post this here as well. Figured some people might be interesting in seeing the lineage of various Smaug releases.

The Smaug Heirarchy.

If anyone knows of something that's missing, I'd appreciate knowing about it. It needs to be a publically released codebase to qualify.

a question though. the "does not comply with licensing" Don't they get in trouble for that?

1) Your MUD would have to qualify as a derivative to be listed in that most likely. Changing a line doesn't qualify you *g*

2) Only if someone chooses to take action.

No, actually all his mud needs to do to qualify for my list is to publically release the code - whether it comlies with the licensing or not is an entirely different issue. One the Smaug developers will have to take up for themselves since none of the infringing derivatives are of my code.

I should list FUSS here I suppose, but I was rather hoping to wait for official word from someone on the RoD team about making it "Smaug 1.4b" as Ntanel told me they wanted to do. They just never seem to answer emails.

believe me xorith, i have changed more than one line of code *grin*
in fact, i have completely taken out limbo, replaced it with my own "backbone.are", added in overland, connectable Items, a whole array of new wiz commands. bleeding support, bandaging, replaced the deal where you actually hit the person, and you give 0 damage cause your Thac0 didnt reach their AC, so instead of saying you miss (where you technically hit) it gives a message like "your attack does not penetrate their armor". The list goes on and on, but it is FAR from being finished... i mean, what code is really "finished" anyway?

Also among all that i have "cleaned up" many files.. making my own xxxxx.c files like pcommands.c and moved all the player commands to that file, wizcommands.c and moved the wiz commands to that one.. and so on and so forth so that anyone who DOES use the code, newbie or not can find where certain things are kept alot easier.

I already have a DarkMUD 1.0 done, and my second version ready to be distributed.. but I'm going to wait till the game is actually up (hopefully sometime in June) Then I wouldn't mind releasing public versions (Tho, like ROD, I'm always going to be a version ahead of everyone else who uses it.)

Actually, my first release will probably just be the one with the overland support. (my Current one) as soon as i remove all the warnings so it looks nice and pretty when it compiles. *smirk*

I'm usually on it during the day, if you wanna drop in and say hi let me know.. I'm not sure if im allowed to post the addy and port here or not being that this is another MUDs site.

in addition.. so i don't get flamed *hehe* I make no attempt to claim myself as a coder.. the whole mud is pretty much a collection of installed snippets with about the same amount of code modified by me. Only a handfull of things written from scratch.. but it really goes together quite nicely.

Personally, while I'd love to be as UBER as Samson, I don't think I'll ever release my own codebase. There's plenty out there, and what I do with my code - for the most part - I'd like to stay with my MUD. I believe in helping the community though.

Hahahahahahaha! Me? Uber? Surely you jest

And one day you may find yourself in the position of releasing code you swore would never be public. Much like us

*snicker* All you have to do to be as UBER as Samson is compile yourself a group of talented and focused individuals and learn to code and play with code until it does what you say I think that pretty much covers it... oh and make it something far more personable than stock Smaug

Disclaimer: This is not saying that Samson doesn't rock, this is saying that in order to make something completely rocking, you're probably going to need some help for all the parts you don't want to do, like building *coughcoughSamsoncoughcough*
