I just downloaded and installed cygwin and smaugfuss 1.7 after becoming frustrated with all the problems i encountered trying to use winsmaug.
When i attempted to use the make command in the src directory to get the shell up and running, i received 10 error messages...
Error Makefile 34: command syntax error
Error Makefile 37: command syntax error
Error Makefile 47: command syntax error
Error Makefile 49: command syntax error
Error Makefile 68: command syntax error
Error Makefile 79: too many rules for target 'smaug'
Error Makefile 84: too many rules for target 'clean'
Error Makefile 85: command syntax error
Error Makefile 98: command syntax error
Error Makefile 99: command syntax error

I asked another coder friend of mine that is more familiar with linux than i am what to do, and
he told me to edit the make file in the src directory, and change the line #Uncomment to compile in Cygwin
#CYGWIN = -DCYGWIN, to #Uncomment to compile in Cygwin CYGWIN = -DCYGWIN.

I tried this, but after doing another make, i still got the exact same errors.

Help?

What's at line 34 or 37?

Are you sure you installed the correct packages?

line 34 is either ifdef IMC, OR C_FILES := imc.c $(C_FILES)...i say or because the line numbers referenced by some of those errors are blank lines, so it's possible the line numbers are off by 1

Make sure you've installed the right packages then. I think you may be missing csh.

I hate sounding like such a newb, but how do i know if i'm missing a package? i downloaded 1.7 from the smaugfuss site, and unrar'd all the files into 1 directory, but i don't see any csh files, or files with a csh extension.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. I meant the Cygwin packages.

It would also help immensely to see the actual error output. And to know if you've read http://www.smaugmuds.org/index.php?a=topic&t=1844

Thanks for all the help, looks like Zeno hit the nail right on the head and i was missing parts of cygwin(a case of clicking next too fast and reading too slow i guess :P). Reinstalling it now and hopefully that'll solve the problem
