Some time ago I downloaded the snippet that NoPlex wrote for replacing the news command and was very much wanting to install it, but I currently have the news snippet by Elder Chronicles installed and hadn't figured out yet the best way to combine them.

I really like the idea of having seperate news for immortals and clans in addition to the general news, but don't quite fully understand how it would work.

How does one access the news since the snippet called for doing 'cedit news delete' but not for adding a new command to read news?

If an immortal accesses the news, will it show them all the posts since their last read one that they have access to or just the immortal ones or ...? It looks like it would show them all the news they have access to in a list format like gboards, not just the ones they haven't read, but everything in a huge list and then they have to read each one like you would a series of notes. Follow?

Also, can you set it to allow clan/guild/order leaders to post news for their c/g/o only? (It looks like only immortals can use the editnews command as written, but within the editnews command there doesn't appear to be a distinction about who can use what parts of it. I guess I could add in a check to only allow immortals of > suchansuch_level for add/remove types/posters...

And is there any way to make an option to display the posts from today only?

um, I think that's all my questions for now, and I really appreciate any response you choose to give, I had considered asking these things of you via email, but thought that, since I'd seen you posting here, putting the answers in forum might serve the community more than just in an email that only I'd ever see... of course, perhaps I'm only being presumptuous in even assuming that you'll answer my slew of questions...

My snippet overrides the command interpreter, using the admin commands provided you can set what command you wish the news to appear on, and what level those people need to be in order to access the news. You're probably going to have to remove Orion's snippet. I also include a PHP script that will parse through the news and put it online for you as long as your webserver is the same as your MUD.

I don't understand, you're saying that you use the editnews command to make news display whenever someone enters a command that you pick? so, you could have it substitute displaying the news for something like north? but only to those who are in the same guild/clan/order/council as the group type or of the level (or higher) than the given post... :(

I don't remember exactly where I tell you to throw it in the interpreter, but it might be before or after the command interpreter. Its probably after. So therefore you'd need to use cedit to remove the command entirely from the game's interpreter.

Um, no, I didn't try to put it in yet, after your last post, I wasn't sure that I understood how one would read the news online (since we're talking about removing the command to do so altogether) if there was an updated posting while they were already online, and that sort of worried me, because I generally use the news command as a change log to keep my players (and immortals) aware of coding/building changes as they happen and routinely tell players who ask about why we needed to do a hotboot to 'read the news and find out', which wouldn't work very well if they had no means to do so short of logging off and back on. :(

You know what, Remcon explained it to me and I think I get it, maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow.. course, converting my existing news file to the new format may be an interesting experience too.. especially since the new one appears to use a different time/date stamp than the old one... maybe I'll wait til the beginning of a month (or right before instead) that way I can archive my old news to the website forum like usual and just start the month out with a new news system without the conversion process... on the other hand, what if I didn't actually get rid of the current news snippet but instead only added yours and gave all my new news types cmd_names that wouldn't conflict, then I could use your system to create separate news types for each clan/guild/order/council and for immortals only and maybe even one for avatars only but still have the old system in place for general game news.. would they conflict too much for me to do that? To do it, I'd have to either copy your news.c into my existing news.c or rename yours and same with news.h, but what else would I have to change? ...hmm, I'll have to think on this a bit.
