Heya, is there a board code like AFKmuds, but for like smaugfuss, all that??

I like the way AFKmud's board system, but it may be a hell to convert it from AFKmud to smaugfuss, just trying to get a system like afkmuds into smaugfuss.. but can't find a good one like it :(

Peace, if anyone has any ideas suggestions, that'd be great, thanks.

I thought that there was a snippet for global boards on here that works for FUSS too, you might want to check the downloads area.

I haven't actually checked out the AFKmud forums, but I recall hearing they are way different. They were done by Xorith and their isn't a snippet anywhere for them that I know of. The global board snippets out had a good bit of issues back when I last looked at them and could have easily been done alot better in different ways.

Yeah, it's Erwin's global board snippet for SMAUG. Converting it to FUSS is almost no work.

Well not to be arrogant or anything ( who, me?! ) but the board code Xorith whipped up for AFKMud blows the socks off of the code Erwin wrote that was later ported to Smaug. There had been talk of making it into a snippet for FUSS, but it never got much beyond that and I'm going to leave that job to Xorith if he wants it released separately.

I haven't actually tried either one yet, though I've looked at both and I didn't think Xorith's looked like it'd take much to use in a FUSS codebase.

It shouldn't. The board code was isolated as best as it could be from the rest of the mud. I tend to like to try and section things off like that whenever possible.

erwins does need a few things, there was actually even a few things that needed to be done that weren't specified in the installation text. i don't know what afkmuds looks like, but if you have the option i find, and a lot of players that i've talked to, that website forums are way more convenient and easier to use. in my mud i only have 3 boards active, general announcements and personal, everything else i keep on the website. your choice though.

Heh. Yeah. I tend to like web based forums alot more than in-game "forums" or boards. Although I have been toying with the idea of interfacing the board in the game with the website just as something interesting to try. Wouldn't really be much use for it, but still.

well you could actually write a function to view the forums in-game pretty easily, well easy enough i guess. on my mud i installed a forum arcade and made it so players could associate their mud characters with an account from our website, and by playing games they could make a little bit of gold for they're mud characters, just as a little something extra instead of just mauling a couple hundred mobs.

While that's a pretty interesting concept, I was thinking that he meant the other way, that the note boards in-game would auto post to the forums...

well i am not sure as to how quicksilver forums work as I use phpnuke/phpBB forums, but if they work off a mysql backend like phpnuke does then it would be easy, as getting mysql into your codebase is very simple. will mud users who do not have a registered account on the forum be able to post or will you develop a way to associate a mud character with a website account like i did.

If I was going to try to link the two that way, I'd want to also link the character to a forum account, let the pfile set their user name and password and if they add a homepage to their whois info, that could be transferred too.. email and IM screen names as well.. in fact, bio could be transferred to interests too, after that, the player would have to log into the forums at some point to finish out the rest of their info I suppose.. and possibly it would the other way as well for that stuff. If the player completed their account profile stuff on the forums it ought to be able to be copied into their corresponding fields of their pfile. Only trouble for me to do that is that I use invision hosted under invisionfree.com so I don't have access to that database directly, though if I ever find a way to collect/back-up all the data from the invision board I'm using, I may yet switch to QSF. *shrug*

It should also be noted that I did say it would be an experiment if done at all. There's no practical purpose in doing this beyond "just because". Unless of course people really REALLY wanted to use it in a live setting.

For one thing it would mean at least your pfiles would need to be in database form so that it would be easy for the forum script to touch them without too much effort. And the mud would have to be geared toward a specific type of forum unless people were willing to go through and alter the data for something else.

If it were done as part of an account system change over at the same time, they might compliment each other rather nicely.
