Ok I'm using cygwin on windows xp sp1. Now I try running it from cygwin using nohup ./startup & and it gets hung up and doesnt do anything. If i press enter I can type again. I tried clicking on afkmud.exe but it opened and closed, saying I needed dlls or some shit. I copied all the cygwin dlls to windows/system/system32 directories and tried it again. It loads stuff but when it gets to DNS something it crashes.

You must of Unpackaged the mud using Winzip, or Winrar.

You should use Cygwin to unpack the mud so the empty folders, some other stuff get done correctly.

As for the log saying theres no such folder, thats because when it was unpacked.. all the empty folders weren't unpacked... (Such as log), others..

and the
limit: Command not found.
limit: Command not found.

Don't worry bout those, their just commands Cygwin don't have.

Peace, hope that helps some...

$ unzip afkmud163.tgz
Archive: afkmud163.tgz
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: afkmud163.tgz may be a plain executable, not an archive
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of afkmud163.tgz or
afkmud163.tgz.zip, and cannot find afkmud163.tgz.ZIP, period.

A handy tip:

man tar

if you are impatient:

tar xzf afkmud163.tgz

The above errors are caused by using something like winzip or winrar to unpack the archive. When using Cygwin, you should treat it as though you were using Linux and stick to tools designed to work in that environment. In the case of tgz files, that means using the tar command to unpack it.

This is necessary because winzip and winrar and many other archiving utilities in Windows don't create the empty directories the codebase requires to operate. Things like the src/o dir, the log dir, and the many empty pfile dirs.
