Ok so I got the mud compiled...

I type: nohup ./startup &

tells me blah blah [####] and that it's appending to nohup
This is ok i guess...

Then i try to connect via my telnet client (alclient) and nothing... any ideas?

Try starting it up without the startup script, see the errors it gives.

If the game is running do a :
netstat -tulpn | grep <YOUR GAME PORT HERE>

You should see something like:
tcp6 0 0 :::4000 :::* LISTEN 2985/./game.x86

That will at least let you know its running and listening to a network port. (Note the above command will only show processes owned by you.)

If it's running and shows a LISTEN connection state, you may need to modify your firewall rules. See your distro help pages if your running under some sort of *nix system.

One other way is check the log folder. Most smaug games have a <game dir>/log that you can view and see what the game is doing as far as loading area's, setting resets and booting.

Hope it helps,
ayuri

I'm having the same exact problem. I'm running the latest LTS Ubuntu server. I tried querying the port info, but got nothing as well. I can run other mud servers, well at least a circlemud, but can't get the Smaugfuss running.

Thanks for any help,
B

I just checked my log files, had almost 9000, it is saying it cannot find Smaug. Could be the same problem you're having? I might wipe it, untar and try compiling again.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
B

When you run 'make' in the ../src/ folder, please post the full output here. That may lead us to some clues as to why it can't find smaug.
If you want to have your make go to a file and console (file so you can search/copy it as some consoles have limited scroll back buffer you could do something like:
make 2>&1 | tee file.txt

That should capture all warnings and build process.

I'll see if I can figure up a Ubuntu vm here in a day or two before I'm able to however.

**EDIT You do have the gcc utilis and zlib-dev packages installed right? (Just gotta ask, never know.)

Thanks Ayuri,
Well I updated all of my files and verified I had the latest gcc and zlib1g-dev. I then removed all files and untar'd the smaug files.
I'm getting a whole bunch of errors when I compile now and at the of the make, it says smaug was not created, here is the data dump:

I suggest making a new topic on this, as it really isn't on-topic for the OP.

I would suggest turning off the -Werror=unused-but-set-variable in the makefile considering that seems to be the biggest issue.

Thanks Remcon, I'm still learning, so may I ask, how would one go about that?

Thanks again,

http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Warning-Options.html should give some explaining on the different ones. look for -Wextra its one of those in it if you don't find it actually added in as -Werror=unused-but-set-variable.

as for where to look. open your makefile and look for W_FLAGS or something and look at the various things in it.

Hope that helps :)

can you copy and paste the whole compiling process output? as well as what it shows when you use "./startup <port #> &" and then use ps ux and show what it shows

$ limit: stacksize: Can't remove limit (Invalid argument)

open the startup and look for
limit stacksize unlimited

change it to
#limit stacksize unlimited

then save it and redo the "./startup <port #> &" and wait a few seconds and then do a "ps ux" and you should notice it running.

Remcon,
I removed the -werror from the makefile and it compiled with errors, but it compiled smaug and it runs fine now, thanks for your help!
