Been building a few days now, and I have had repeated troubles with crashes. Mostly on saving - foldarea or savearea. Any tips for preventing these problems in general? Or specifically?

Well like the problem with not having <time.h> included, I don't seem to have this problem with a fresh download of AFKMud 2.14 in cygwin. Should post what is in the log file or maybe even step through it with gdb to find the crashing issue.

It isn't like that - not consistent, or anything. Circumstances are difficult to duplicate. Also - log file? I'm assuming that that should be in the folder 'log' - but it isn't. At any rate, I believe it gave something like, 'segmentation error' and crashed on foldarea. Wiped the .are file, and the .bak file.

The log files are created if you use the startup file to start the mud. Ah so it isn't a constant crash so harder to pin down the problem. Your best bet is probably to open it in gdb and just keep doing it until you get it to crash and then you can see where it crashed at and why.

Keep in mind AFKMud hasn't been tested in Cygwin in a long time. Probably 2+ years by now. It also never saw a great deal of regular use while Alsherok was still up because the C++ conversion took place very late in the MUD's lifespan. I'm certainly willing to patch up any problems that get reported but I need more to go on than just "foldarea crashes sometimes".

The GDB tutorial linked here should be enough to get started with. If not, Nick Gammon has one on his site as well but I don't have the link handy.

You should be able to reach Nick's at http://mushclient.com/gdb or else use http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/bbshowpost.php?id=3653, either way, it's pretty comprehensive.

Yeah, sorry I don't have more to give you. I'm a novice, what can I say. Buuut it just crashed again - and this is what I've got :

3 [main] afkmud 4200 sig_send: wait for sig_complete event failed, signal 6, rc 258, Win32 error 0
Aborted

Anyway, I'll take a look at that tutorial and get back to you when I have more info. Thanks for the assist.

No worries, check for a core file somewhere in your area directory (or src directory, depending on how you started the game) to use gdb on, failing that, anything in your log files might at least give us an idea what was happening at the time of the crash, but gdb would really be far more helpful.
