I'm trying to fix a defunct processes bug. Basically the mud is leaving behind zombie child processes that should be cleaned up by a call to wait().

I traced the problem to the fork() that loads resolver, then realized that resolver is only *one function*. Why go through all the trouble of loading another process and creating a pipe when that function can be called directly?

I believe that it's called asynchronously, meaning that the MUD doesn't block on the address resolution. This is very desirable because somethings resolution takes a long time, and you don't want the whole MUD to stop. One way of doing things asynchronously is with threads, but it's a little easier in this case to do it with a separate process.
