Ok here we go...
Fire up fotefuss and set your self to a clan. The Empire in my case. Goto 1050 clanbuyship twin test, then showship test.

Note what its saying:
Civilian Starfighter : Test (TIE)
Filename: ship_12001.sss
Home: Coruscant   Description:   Current system: None
Owner: The Empire   Pilot:    Copilot:

The Owner field is correct, but it looks like its still getting dropped as a civilian ship under type, not Imperial Starfighter.
There refs all over the code for ship->type SHIP_IMPERIAL and SHIP_REPUBLIC.

Just though I'd toss this one out there. I know its a minor thing, just slightly annoying.

I know this is rather old, but the SHIP_IMPERIAL/SHIP_REPUBLIC stuff is mostly to prevent imperial or republic specific ships from being purchased by players and to prevent one clan buying the clan specific ships of the other. I personally removed the imperal/republic ship defines and replaced them with military..

I thought the SHIP_IMPERIAL/REPUBLIC didn't have anything to do to prevent general public/other clan's from buying them. Thought that was all handled in Clan define in the .proto file. With out knowing the intent, I'd say this is geared to skills that players can use. Or maybe part of do_look to color code ships in space to say 'I'm a republic' ship and what not.

*shrug* It's in the code and not doing much of anything. Might as well use it somehow.
