im new to afk mud and smaug in general, how do i assign areas to myself? when i try to vassign i get "Vassign is disabled in this port." any clue how to fix that or another way to assign myself areas to start to build?

You'll probably want to disable the multiport code if you're not actually using multiple ports.

Make sure the following lines in the Makefile look like this:

#Multiport support. Comment out to disable this feature.
#MULTIPORT = 1
