Good evening,
thanks very much for the site. This is a newbie question of course.
Where on earth is the documentation for compiling AFKmud on cygwin for windows?
I searched twenty odd posts describing cygwin errors and not one link to documentation,
I looked in all the directories after downloading the src files for the latest afk and couldnt seem
to find anything.
I checked this forum expecting to find a sticky with documentation and didnt.
pwease help :(

It's possible that there is no documentation. Can you be more specific about the problems you're having?

Right, you are correct that you don't have the gd library development files installed. According to the Cygwin package list, the one you want is libgd-devel. So, you should close your Cygwin prompts, install that package from the package manager, and then restart Cygwin and try compiling again.

hi david thanks again for guiding me here.

I ran the compile after adding the dev as you suggested.. looked ok except for some odd errors that didnt affect compile.

Ran the afkmud.exe: first it asked for all the cygwin.dll files so i had to put them in the src directory.

Then it ran but with numerous errors: seems to have trouble accessing a LOT of directories.

Checking for required directories...

Could you paste what they were? Maybe they're significant.

Then it ran but with numerous errors: seems to have trouble accessing a LOT of directories.

Hmm, not sure why that would happen, maybe somebody more familiar with AFKMud could comment. Have you edited any of the files? It's possible that you introduced bad line endings by using an editor other than a Unix one (e.g. notepad instead of vi).

perhaps some kind of permissions error.. i tried to 'make clean' and it gave me permission denied hmm..

im going to clean up and try compile again to capture errors.

Oh, most of those warnings (not errors) are indeed harmless. I'm a little concerned about uninitialized variables from the MUD code (as opposed to the STL) but, well, hey.

If you got a permission denied error when you tried to make clean, that does sound like a problem. You might want to make sure that the MUD is closed when you do that, though. Also, make sure you start the game from the right directory (it looks like you did, because otherwise it wouldn't have found the area files).

First off: http://www.smaugmuds.org/index.php?a=topic&t=1077 would have told you all you need as far as packages for Cygwin. So it's entirely unfair to say nobody posted anything saying what's needed. The post is even stickied.

Secondly:

Checking for required directories...
Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:53:33 PM SAST :: Directory check passed.
sh: touch: command not found

The lack of a touch command indicates something in Cygwin isn't installed right. To my knowledge that's part of the basic package. Your permissions errors with Cygwin are also somewhat bothersome and may lead to problems.

Also - are you by chance using Vista?

Hi Samson,

great of you to make the source code available, honored to be chatting with you.

as far as documentation goes, i did find that link you mentioned above.. i suppose
i expected there would be more difficulties and therefore more documentation,
as opposed to just adding 3 cygwin modules.

I did an out of the box install of cygwin on windows xp.. if you think its a basic issue i
will install cygwin on one of our servers and see if that improves matters.
I myself don't use vista.

I got the same end of line errors on a second install on a different machine.

Theres only thing I can think of.. in install options when you setup Cygwin
it offers a choice for the Defaul Text File type between:

Unix/Binary (recommended) and
DOS/Text

I choose Unix/Binary.. since most of the errors are end of line data errors
perhaps I need to choose DOS/text..

will try.. if anyone has managed to get this working on windows.. would really appreciate
advice..
