That would depend on the time of day. Deserts get rather cold at night. I can't remember exactly why, but it had something to do with the lack of humidity, and general lack of plant life or something that caused them to not retain any of the heat during the night, and on the inverse, none of the chill during the day. .........................

There could be any number of explanations. The desert could be surrounded by arctic regions, it could be a bug, or it could be a seasonal thing. Can you post the full output of the time command? .........................
