Well... today I moved from the enormous world of mudding, to the much larger, and scary *gulp, and laggier world of building. WHICH AS I HAVE FOUND OUT... isn't all room mob and obj editing. I created 500 original rooms in my windows 1.4 build smaug, about 20 unique mobs, and a full set of sweet imm items. That was fun, till I saved, closed out, slept, woke up, started the server, and notice it was corrupt in many many many many ways, and I clean installed smaug again -.- Fun, so this time I decided to do it right, and came across this site, found out a bit about snippets and realized that there is no simple web page tutorial that gives directions to install a snippet :(. sosad. So while looking for guides on how to add snippets somehow I found out about AFKmud and basically wtf'd out loud. Thank god mother was not in earshot. ANYWAYS, I also noticed that it can't work in windows, or perhaps it can with something called cygwin... and I'm just totally out of any possible comfort zone any normal human can have, without years of intense training, fortunately I know lots of commands, I know how to make an area I know how to do all the good stuff *except install snippets and use this cygwin...* so I'm just wondering if there's any material I should use as a referance in my self given crash course, and if at all possible, someone could tell me if any afkmud version at all is compatible with windows. And how to install a snippet.

I'd really like to install a snippet.

Sorry for the double post, but If someone could direct me to the tutorial to use cygwin which is so easy to find for anyone with half a brain, (which is why I can't) that would be awesome.

Snippets generally come with explicit instructions on what needs to be done to install it. If it doesn't then I'd argue that you should look for different snippets. No instructions on what to do with it would be asking a bit much, even of seasoned developers. :)

As for how to use Cygwin, it behaves more or less like a linux shell does. Once you have it installed, there should be a shortcut somewhere on your desktop to launch the command line. What to do with it from there depends on how familiar you are with linux shells.

If you have the resources I would seriously recommend a VM over cygwin. Cygwin is ass.

Well, I've got cygwin installed, and I'm not sure what VM is, and also I've noticed in my smaug there's no mud.h file, or that tables.c or whatever it was file either... I think I had it properly installed (cygwin) but of course I still have no idea on how to compile with it. Is there any documentation on compiling with it?

Wait wait wait... I've found the compiling example on gammon... so I'm going to try and see if I can get that to work, I'm going to go with AFKMud 1.8, because I read somewhere around here that AM 2 doesn't seem to work on windows, and if it does then plz tell me.

Ah-ha! Got 1.8 to work... except I was spammed with errors and only socials work once I log in >.> I got the usual errors when it doesn't load a command, except about 5000 times. I'm wondering if I didn't compile something, or compiled it wrong, if you want a list of errors (HUGELIST) then I'll pm them to you, because honestly I don't know what I could have done wrong :(.

Sorry for the constant posting right after post and such, but edit doesn't seem to work for me today... Anyways, this is a link to a pic that I snapped... and confused now.

EDIT: Haha! Got edit to work. ANYWAYS, I realized that the dependancies were probably different from afkmud 1.8 compared to the ones listed for 2.0... I didn't know that was for 2.0 btw, so I got 2.0...3, and I compiled that, when it said something about g++ not recognizing rdynamic or something, I got a bit worried, but it finished compiling, then it said I was missing a dl which isn't even included in the bin file of cygwin, so I'm confused there as well. The dll which is missing cygXpm-4.dll, which again I'm not sure where to get, I even went as far as intsalling all the devel things on cygwin, all the shells, and all the libs. Anybody know what's going on with this?

EDIT2: Back to the crapload of errors, and only being able to use socials... I'm going to explore this rdynamic thing, because it most definately has something to do with all of the links being broken to the other files... that have the commands, skill spells, etc. etc.

yeah, I did realize where all the dlls were, and to copy pasting the errors, I think it's just because of something I didn't do. Oh, and I found this: http://www.smaugmuds.org/index.php?a=topic&t=2530&p=9440. Is this what I need, and how would I check the make file and deal with said comment in that post?
