I've been trying to run swfote11fuss and swr1fusscustom, and aside from a few warnings in swr1fusscustom, it went flawlessly. But they both seem to have the same problem when I try to run them.
They are fine until they're assigning gsn's (where swr11fuss has many lines of skills it can't find, and custom has one), but that doesn't seem to be the issue either (but I hope you'll tell me for sure ;-)

After the gsn's, it starts to read from the area list, and both codes go dead.
The 'shutdown' logs simply say 'Unable to open area list'.

Here's what swr1fuss custom has to say:
Mon Nov 22 18:19:19 2004 :: Pfile scan time reset to default time of 6am.

Am I the only one inept enough not to see the solution?
(sort of hope so, should increase the chances of help ;)

Thanks

That's a common Smaug type thing. It's nothing really to worry alot about. It just means that in some way the makemissle skill doesn't exist and so it's telling you that assigning a GSN for it won't work. The original stock Smaug 1.4a package had the same issue with the shieldwork skill that never existed. You can just ignore it, or if it's bugging you, just remove the ASSIGN_GSN statement for makemissle.

Thanks Samson, This is appreciated, but in all hornesty it doesn't help me much.
I still can't run the code. 'ps' command show nothing running.

I'm trying to start it with 'nohup ./startup 4000 &', which put some things in nohup.out which might be helpful:

/usr/bin/nohup: line 79: exec: startup: not found
/usr/bin/nohup: line 79: exec: startup: not found
/usr/bin/nohup: line 79: exec: startup: not found
/usr/bin/nohup: /swr/swfotefuss/src/startup: /bin/csh: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/nohup: line 79: /swr/swfotefuss/src/startup: No error

I bet these missing libraries (where!?) is related to the missing areas as well. The programs abort whenever they reach that point - logging a single line to shutdown log : Unable to open area list.

Am I using the right command to get it running?
How do I help it find those libraries and the area list?

Please help me. This code is the most promissing I've yet to encounter for the game I wan't to create, and it's really frustrating to be so close to setting it up.

Thank you,
Massaria.

Shouldn't you be starting it up from the /area subdirectory? That's what I've always done. Might explain why it can't find/open the areas list, but that's just a guess.

The startup script supplied with the code should be in the src directory and called from there, not from /usr/bin. While in the src dir, type:

nohup ./startup &

This should work just fine, even on Cygwin since lately it's been installing with the proper shell packages.

You can also call the exe directly from the area dir, but I usually only do that when testing something that might cause crash-boot cycles.

Man, Haven't seen many code bases, but this doubtlessly the most undocumented I've ever seen.

I know I'm testing your patience here, but no more than mine is being tested, I'm sure.

I've been running startup from /src directory the whole time. I don't know how to execute a file from a directory I'm not in.

When I do so (nohup ./startup &;), it goes:
[1] 1666201

<prompt>
$ noup: appending output to 'nohup.out'

... and then just jump a line and stands there blinking at me. No new prompt.

Then, If I kill the script, or just hit enter, it returns with something like:
[1]+ Exit 1 nohup ./startup

While it is waiting there, I open another cygwin window and type ps to see if any new progs are running, but nothing. Something should show on 'ps' if it was running correctly, no?

The nohup.out file contains 2 lines:

/usr/bin/nohup: /swr/swr1fuss/src/startup: /bin/csh: bad interpreter: Permission denied
/usr/bin/nohup: line 79: /swr/swr1fuss/src/startup: No error

It's the same deal with all of these:
swfote11fuss
swr1fuss
swr1fusscustom

Just making those directories doesn't work. Is Csh some lib i need for Cygwin?
I've been looking, but can't find anything like that.

Any and all input is appreciated. Thank you,
Massaria.

Try typing this:

chmod u+x startup

See if that helps. The startup script needs execute permission and may not have it. If this isn't the problem, then you may need to load up your Cygwin setup and see if the tcsh shell package is installed and install it if needed.
