Will there ever be another SmaugWiz? As someone with little time to invest in learning MUD coding I found it a quick and easy tool to get something up and running so that I was able to take advantage of my inspirations and design things that were actually playable.

Is there hope for those of us looking for something quick and easy to set up on a windows machine?

It's not looking so good for SmaugWiz. From what I can tell, Rustry has never updated the project since 2001, even though the domain changed to www.smaugwiz.com and the page itself was last updated in May 2005. Despite its age though it's still useful for local area editing and testing. Even though the file format it saves areas in won't run in a stock Smaug, there is a snippet floating about that will let Smaug FUSS convert the areas on load, and AFKMud has that built in already.

If you need something in Windows just to tinker with, test, and otherwise build in, Smaug FUSS is the best general purpose choice for that. It will work with Cygwin just fine. If you want something with more features, then you're in the right place already :)

Though from what Lazerous had told me the last time I talked to him while he was still use SmaugWiz about a year and a half ago, Rusty was quite willing to help SmaugWiz admins make changes to the code as long as they were willing to contact him directly and had an inkling of what they were doing in C++. *shrug*

No offense to Rustry, but that's not a particularly productive way to support the code. A forum or something would at least allow solutions to be out in the open for others to make use of, even if the forum itself is semi-restrictive about who he'd allow to use it.

Cygwin can be a pain in the butt for people unfamiliar with command prompts and such. Having to suffer through that(I do understand it's a great tool to say the least) probably is a limiting factor for getting more people into the mudding experience.

Obviously I can't whine and complain about free software not being suitable to my needs, but I'm just surprised that something like SmaugWiz isn't out there. That is, a simple little application that can be up and running with one click.

But, while I rather agree with Samson's perspective on this, SmaugWiz is out there, it just hasn't been updated in awhile now.. then again, neither has Smaug officially. *shrug*

Well, Rustyr has said he no longer is supporting smaugwiz.
I will assist anyone with questions on it I have a forum for this:

http://z8.invisionfree.com/draenor/index.php?

How ever, I myself have migrated away from it myself now,
I am not doing it because of smaugwiz but more due to MS XP.

XP is a beast that should never have been concieved.

That being said, I will help if I can, as I played with the code base since 1996.
If its really desired, I will take my draenormud version, a derivitive due to all
the changes it went through, and off it up for people to play with.
It was based off of smaugwiz 2.02 and has over 50 unique areas
and a ton of other features.

But before I can do that there are a few codes I will need to talk to.
Mainly the great Vir, who has been absent quite some time.
Email: ryan_rae@hotmail.com
My email is another option for coding questions or just anything smaugwiz related
but I do prefer the forum so everyone can put a few words in...

That's a shame that even Rustyr has given up on it, but maybe it's also saying something about the project... on the other hand, it's nice that you've decided to take up the torch from him on this, in the same way that it's nice of Samson to offer support for Smaug through SmaugFUSS and AFKMud.

*snicker* There is that new thing called Vista due out any day now.

While I haven't spoken to him in quite some time now, I do see him on IMs every now and then still, perhaps on your new ubuntu machine you should set up gaim and set a buddy pounce for when he next logs on if you want to catch him... just a thought.

Actually, I believe support via direct personal email on a one on one basis is exactly what Samson was saying back in May when he said:

So I'd think that inviting folks who desire support to your forums is a far better solution in general.
