I wish to implement an account system, but I have no idea where to start.

If anyone has ever tried to implement one that would be cool.

Thanks in advance,
Vintar

I know that Dystopia or Fear has account systems but I don't know how to take it from there and put it in afkmud.

I've implemented an account system, but essentially based on sql; is it useful for you?

The accounts system in FEAR would be the closest relative to the AFKMud code since both of them are derived from Smaug. An SQL account system would be more trouble to put in but would probably benefit you more in the long run.

I've thought about adding every now and then but never got much past that because there's just not that much demand for it.

I would also be interested in implementing an account based system using a MySQL backend. I was thinking of setting it up so that users had an account name, which would then allow them to have a number of characters stored and they could select a character to play or create another. Of course there would be a limit on the number of characters they could have.

I have tried looking for the 'FEAR' code, but haven't managed to find anything so far. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be useful. I am pretty much OK with the MySQL side of things, just wondering how people have integrated this type of functionality into SMAUG or AFK.

I don't know about the Fear code or MySQL, but I think I'd love to see an account system for Smaug. I allow full multiplaying on my SmaugFUSS mud, provided none of the characters involved are PK characters, so it's not about restricting anything, per se, but just organizing pfiles and such, and I'd personally be interested in knowing a little more about my players and I see having an account system in place as a means by which I can ask players for their email or IM addresses for my records without having to ask them to post them to their bio or anywhere else that other players can get them too.

There should be some kind of patch that would install an account system so the owner of a mud could make that decision themselves.

The account system on which I'm working on now is pratially from SoI (Shadows of Isildur) code, partially from Fear and partially from my own delirium :P; the mud is in alpha stage and I'm absolutely not a good coder, so don't expect too much from my work, but till now it seems to work quite good.
My code is not public jet, but I think I can release a sort of snippet in little time.
Indeed, if you find it useful, any help for bugfix and better implementation would be a real blessing! :D

Ok, so. What kinds of information do people want to see in an account system?

I would assume at least:

Account name, password, email addy.
List of character names.

Anything more? Tempted to throw something together.

Maybe real name, age, etc. for some sort of registration.

Maybe instant message addresses too.. but, yes, age would be really nice, real name would be handy (though email would suffice for that)
